FAQs

What is the daily schedule like?

In the morning, children participate in group activities upon arrival. They enjoy arts, crafts, science experiments, or learning about seasonal events. During this time, they learn how to use scissors, glue, and paints, and they enjoy drawing and crafts. The activities change on a daily basis.

In the morning circle time, children learn the calendar, today's weather, play with cards (Hiragana, numbers, pictures), or sing the song of the month. This is followed by a restroom break, and then they start individual Montessori work. Individual work helps promote independence. Children discover their favorite activities by choosing self-directed tasks based on their interests. Work consists of a variety of activities based on age and interests, such as numbers, Hiragana, puzzles, 3D objects, and sewing and practical life activities. After that, we have lunch, outdoor/indoor play depending on the weather, story time, and then pick up time.

My child has not yet been potty trained completely.

It is very common for children to learn potty training from their peers. We strongly encourage your child attend school with underwear on instead of training pants or a diaper.  Please let us know if your child is really reluctant to do it.

What is the school year like?

School starts in September (after Labor Day) and finishes in early June. Nanakusa Preschool mostly follows the Portland Public School calendar.

What is the maximum class size?

15 children for each classes.

How is the classroom formed?

One multi-age class. In the multi-age class, younger children who go to school for the first time are getting used to unfamiliar environments, work, and activities by watching older peers. Also, older children naturally develop a sense of responsibility and thoughtfulness by helping and teaching younger children. With this self-awareness and pride, they can transition to kindergarten with age-appropriate social skills and confidence. In such an environment, they build good friendships, regardless of age differences.
